More Pocket Money!
The Prompt
Imagine you're a brilliant lawyer, but instead of a courtroom, your audience is your parents, and your case is for more pocket money! This is your chance to shine as a persuasive writer.
Your task is to write a compelling, polite letter to your mum and dad. In this letter, you need to make a very strong argument for why your weekly pocket money should be increased. Don't just ask; convince them!
Think carefully about these three key points to include:
- Your Reasons: Why do you need or deserve more? Is it because you're saving for something special, want more independence, or feel your current amount isn't quite enough for your needs/wants as you get older?
- Your Responsibilities: What extra chores or tasks are you willing to take on around the house to earn this increase? Show them you're prepared to work for it and be more helpful.
- Wise Management: How will you prove you can handle the extra money responsibly? Will you save a portion, spend it carefully on specific things, or perhaps budget for different items? Show them you've thought about how to manage it.
Your letter should be well-organised, respectful, and use strong arguments and examples to make your case. Make sure your parents can see that you've thought it all through and are ready for this extra responsibility!

📝 Sample Answer
Dear Mum and Dad,
I am writing to you today to make a very strong and respectful case for increasing my weekly pocket money. I currently receive £4 a week, and while I am grateful for this, I believe that an increase to £6 would be much more suitable and beneficial, especially as I am getting older and have more responsibilities.
Firstly, with an extra £2 a week, I would be able to save up more effectively for important things. For example, I'm really keen to buy a new football, which costs £20, and with my current money, it would take me five weeks of saving everything! With £6, I could reach my goal much faster and learn more about saving for bigger items. It would also allow me to contribute a little towards treats when I'm out with friends, showing I can be more independent.
Secondly, I am absolutely prepared to take on more responsibilities around the house to earn this increase. I promise to consistently keep my bedroom tidy and organised every single day without being asked. I would also happily take responsibility for laying the table for dinner each evening and helping to clear it afterwards, even when it's not my turn on the rota. I understand that earning more money means doing more to help our family.
Finally, I want to show you that I can manage money wisely. I plan to divide my £6 into two parts: £4 for saving towards my football and other bigger goals, and £2 for smaller weekly spends like a comic or a small snack. I’ve even started a little notebook to track what I spend and what I'm saving for, so I can be really organised.
I truly believe I am mature enough and responsible enough for this extra pocket money, and I hope you will seriously consider my request.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
Love, [Your Name]
