Healthy Snacks for School

Primary & ElementaryChallengingPersuasive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine your school is having a big discussion with parents about what snacks children bring to school. Some people think only super-healthy snacks (like fruit and veg) should be allowed, because they help children stay focused and full of energy for learning. Other people think it's okay to have a wider variety of snacks, as long as they're not unhealthy all the time.

Your task is to write a persuasive piece for this 'Parent's Forum'. You need to pick one side of the argument and convince the parents that your idea is the best.

Will you argue that:

  1. Only healthy snacks should be allowed? Explain how this is 'crucial' for energy and concentration, helping children learn better.
  2. A wider variety of snacks should be allowed? Explain why this might be better, perhaps for choice, enjoyment, or teaching balance.

Remember, you're trying to persuade them to agree with YOU!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Start with a strong sentence that tells parents your main idea straight away.

  • Give at least two good reasons why your idea is important, using examples.

  • Use powerful words like 'essential', 'imagine', or 'important' to make your arguments stronger.

  • Finish by reminding parents of your main point and why they should agree with you.

📝 Sample Answer

Dear Parents,

I believe it is absolutely essential that our school adopts a 'healthy snacks only' policy. Imagine a classroom where every child is buzzing with natural energy, not sugar highs and crashes! When children eat snacks like apples, bananas, or carrot sticks, their brains get a steady supply of fuel. This means they can concentrate much better in lessons, understand new things more easily, and have the energy to play happily at playtime without feeling tired or grumpy. Allowing only healthy options isn't about taking away fun; it's about giving every child the best chance to learn, grow, and thrive every single day. Let's help our children shine brightly!
