Strict Screen Time Limits

The Prompt

Hey amazing writers! We live in a world full of screens – phones, tablets, TVs, computers! You probably spend quite a bit of time looking at them. But what about limits? Should there be really strict rules about how much time you spend on screens each day?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write a persuasive essay to your parents. A persuasive essay is like trying to convince someone to agree with your idea, using really good reasons!

You need to argue for strict daily screen time limits (meaning you think there should be strict rules) OR against strict daily screen time limits (meaning you think there shouldn't be strict rules).

Think carefully about:

  • Your Health: How does screen time affect your eyes, your sleep, or how much you run around?
  • Your Hobbies: Does screen time get in the way of playing outside, reading, or doing art? Or does it help you find new hobbies?
  • Your Learning: Does it help you with homework and research, or does it distract you from school?

Use strong reasons and examples to convince your parents that your way of thinking is the best! Make them see your point of view!

šŸ’” Writing Tips

  • •

Pick a side! Decide if you are arguing for strict screen time limits or against them. Stick to your choice.

  • •

Think of reasons. For each point (health, hobbies, learning), come up with at least one good reason why your side is best.

  • •

Imagine your parents. What words or examples would convince them? Use strong, persuasive language.

  • •

Start with your main idea. Let your parents know straight away what you believe.

  • •

Give examples! Don't just say 'it's bad for my health' – explain how (e.g., 'my eyes get tired').

šŸ“ Sample Answer

Dear Mum and Dad,

I am writing to you today to persuade you that strict daily screen time limits are a really good idea for our family. I know it might sound strange coming from me, but I've been thinking about it a lot.

First, I think it would be much better for my health. Sometimes, after a long time on my tablet, my eyes feel tired, and I don't feel like running around outside. If I had a clear limit, I’d spend more time playing football in the garden or riding my bike, which makes me feel much healthier and sleep better at night.

Secondly, it would definitely help with my hobbies. Last week, I barely touched my new Lego set because I was too busy watching videos. If my screen time was limited, I’d have more time to build amazing things, read my favourite books, or even help you bake in the kitchen. I think it would make me a more creative person.

I know screens can be fun, but I truly believe that having stricter limits would help me be healthier, more active, and find more time for the things I love to do away from a screen. Please think about it!
