The Sound of Silence

Secondary & High SchoolExpertDescriptive Writing

In this descriptive writing task, your challenge is to describe silence.

Explore the paradox of describing something that is defined by what is missing. Consider the following aspects in your writing:

  • What it looks like: How does the environment reflect this lack of sound?
  • How it feels: Does the silence have a physical weight, temperature, or texture?
  • Presence vs. Absence: Is the silence an empty void, or does it feel like an active, living force in the room?

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Focus on the absence of sound, but then describe what is left. Use metaphors and similes (e.g., 'silence as thick as velvet'). Explore the feeling or mood silence creates – is it peaceful, unsettling, profound? What other senses become heightened when sound is absent?

📝 Sample Answer

It wasn't merely the absence of noise; it was a presence, thick and palpable, a heavy blanket draped over the world. The silence had a texture, like polished stone, smooth and cold, pressing against the eardrums. It looked like an untouched canvas, infinite and still, waiting for a brushstroke of sound that never came. In this profound stillness, every other sense sharpened to an excruciating degree: the gentle hum of my own heartbeat became a thunderous drum, the distant creak of floorboards a monumental groan. It held a peculiar weight, a stillness so complete that it seemed to absorb all light and motion, leaving behind only the ghost of thought, echoing endlessly in its cavernous, magnificent void.
