The Prompt

Imagine you are standing at the foot of a magnificent mountain, or perhaps soaring high above it like an eagle! Your task is to paint a picture with words, bringing this giant of nature to life for your reader.

Think about:

  • What does it look like? Is it tall and jagged, or rounded and gentle? What colours can you see – grey rock, green trees, white snow?
  • What can you hear? Is there wind whistling, birds singing, or perhaps a distant river?
  • What can you feel? The cold air, the rough rock, the soft grass?
  • What is around it? Are there forests, sparkling lakes, or tiny villages?
  • What's the weather like? Is it bathed in sunshine, shrouded in mist, or capped with snow?
  • How does the mountain make you feel? Small, amazed, or adventurous?

Let your imagination run wild! You can describe a real mountain you've seen or one you've completely made up. Use exciting adjectives and strong verbs to make your description vivid and memorable. Make your reader feel like they are right there with you, exploring every detail of this incredible natural wonder.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Use your five senses: What can you see, hear, smell, and feel on the mountain?

  • Think about powerful words: Instead of 'big', try 'enormous' or 'towering'.

  • Describe different parts: The pointy peak, the rocky slopes, the trees at the bottom.

  • Imagine the weather: Is it sunny, foggy, or covered in snow? How does this change the mountain?

  • Use similes: Can you compare the mountain to something else? (e.g., 'The peak was as sharp as a dragon's tooth.')

📝 Sample Answer

The Ancient Giant stood sentinel over the valley, its jagged peak a dark crown against the pale morning sky. Its slopes, a patchwork quilt of deep emerald forests and grey, splintered rock, stretched endlessly upwards. As the sun climbed higher, the mountain seemed to awaken, shadows retreating from the deep crevices that scarred its face like old wrinkles. I could almost hear the wind whispering secrets through the pine trees, a soft, mournful sigh that echoed across the vastness. Higher up, where the trees dared not grow, patches of stubborn snow clung to the ledges, sparkling like scattered diamonds. Below, a shimmering blue lake mirrored the mountain's majesty, while tiny stone cottages nestled at its base looked no bigger than children's building blocks. The air here was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant pine. It felt like a place where magic might still linger, a silent, powerful guardian watching over the world.
