Sports Match
The Prompt
Imagine you are a sports commentator, but instead of just talking, you are painting a picture with words! Your challenge is to vividly describe a sports match you have either played in yourself or watched from the sidelines. It could be any sport – football, netball, rugby, swimming, cricket, or even a school sports day race!
We want to feel like we are right there with you. Think about:
- Before the whistle: What was the atmosphere like? Were the crowds cheering? What did the pitch or court look like?
- During the action: Describe the key moments. Was there a fantastic pass, a nail-biting save, or a triumphant goal? How did the players move? What sounds could you hear – the thump of a ball, the shouts of players, the roar of the crowd?
- After the final whistle: How did everyone feel? Were they celebrating, or were they a bit sad?
Use exciting adjectives (describing words) and adverbs (how something is done) to make your writing come alive. Try to use your five senses to help us experience the match through your eyes, ears, and feelings!

📝 Sample Answer
The air crackled with excitement as our school football team ran onto the muddy pitch. The crowd, mostly parents and younger siblings, cheered loudly, their voices echoing in the chilly autumn air. I could smell the damp grass and the faint scent of hot dogs from the snack stand. The referee blew his whistle, a sharp, piercing sound that made everyone jump. Suddenly, our star striker, Leo, weaved through two defenders, his legs a blur of motion. He eyed the goal, took a deep breath, and thwack! The ball soared through the air, a bright orange streak against the grey sky, and landed perfectly in the top corner of the net! A huge roar erupted from our side, and we all jumped up and down, hugging each other, absolutely buzzing with joy.
