Library or Bookshop

The Prompt

Imagine stepping through the doors of your favourite library or a magical bookshop. What do you notice first? Your task is to paint a vivid picture with words, describing the inside of this special place as if your reader is right there with you.

Think about what your five senses would experience:

  • Sight: What do the bookshelves look like? Are they tall and wooden, or bright and modern? What colours do you see? Are there comfy armchairs, study desks, or perhaps a children's corner?
  • Sound: Is it completely silent, or can you hear soft whispers, the gentle turning of pages, or the quiet murmur of people browsing?
  • Smell: Does it smell of old paper, new books, or perhaps coffee from a small cafe?
  • Touch: What would it feel like to run your hand over a dusty old cover, or sit on a squashy sofa?

Don't just list things; bring them to life! Use strong adjectives and adverbs to make your descriptions pop. Help your reader feel the atmosphere and imagine every detail, from the tallest shelf to the smallest bookmark.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Use Your Senses: What can you see, hear, smell, and even imagine touching inside?

  • Be Specific: Don't just say 'books' – describe 'towering stacks of dusty hardbacks' or 'colourful rows of brand-new paperbacks'.

  • Powerful Words: Use exciting adjectives (e.g., 'ancient', 'sparkling', 'gigantic') and adverbs (e.g., 'gently', 'softly').

  • Show, Don't Tell: Instead of 'It was quiet', try 'Only the soft rustle of turning pages broke the silence'.

  • Feelings: How does the place make you feel? Peaceful? Excited? Curious?

📝 Sample Answer

The old bookshop felt like a warm, secret hug. Tall, wooden shelves, groaning under the weight of countless stories, stretched up to the high ceiling. A comforting scent of old paper and freshly brewed coffee hung in the air, mixing with a faint hint of dust. Sunlight, thick with dancing motes, streamed through a tall, arched window, illuminating a cosy reading nook with a squashy velvet armchair. The only sounds were the soft rustle of pages being turned and the gentle creak of the floorboards as someone carefully walked by. Each book, from the tiny, colourful picture books to the thick, leather-bound mysteries, seemed to whisper tales of adventure and wonder.
