School Playground

Primary & ElementaryModerateDescriptive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine stepping out into your school playground. What makes it special? What do you notice first?

Your task is to become a super-star describer and paint a picture of your school playground using words! Help your reader feel like they are right there with you, exploring every corner.

Think about:

  • What you see: Are there bright markings on the ground, tall trees, a colourful climbing frame, or maybe a quiet bench? Is it sunny or cloudy?
  • What you hear: Do you hear the shouts of children, the squeak of a swing, the rustle of leaves, or the distant sound of a bell?
  • What you feel: Is the ground bumpy or smooth? Is the air warm or chilly? What does the bark of the tree feel like?
  • What you smell: Can you smell freshly cut grass, damp earth after rain, or maybe the scent of flowers nearby?

Try to use amazing adjectives (like 'gigantic slide' or 'whispering leaves') and powerful verbs (like 'scurrying children' or 'gleaming metal') to bring your playground to life for the reader.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Use your five senses! What can you see, hear, smell, and feel in the playground?

  • Think of exciting adjectives (describing words) and adverbs (how things happen) to make your writing sparkle.

  • Describe specific things: the rusty gate, the bouncy grass, the colourful markings, the tall climbing frame.

  • Imagine you're taking someone on a tour – what would you show them first?

  • Show, don't just tell! Instead of 'It was fun,' describe why it was fun.

📝 Sample Answer

As the bell shrieks, a wave of children floods into the playground, their joyful shouts echoing against the brick walls. The bright yellow lines of the hopscotch grid gleam under the morning sun, waiting for bouncy feet. Over by the tall, green climbing frame, a group of friends scramble like busy ants, their laughter tinkling in the air. The old wooden bench under the whispering oak tree offers a quiet spot, its worn surface smooth from countless sittings. A gentle breeze carries the scent of damp earth and distant daisies, while a lone robin hops across the bouncy, emerald grass, searching for worms. Even the rusty gate at the far end seems to hum with the energy of play.
