Rainy Day Feelings

Primary & ElementaryChallengingDescriptive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine you're looking out of your window on a truly rainy day. What does the sky look like? Is it grey and heavy, or are there flashes of lightning? What sounds can you hear – the gentle patter, a steady drumming, or a wild downpour? Can you smell the fresh, damp earth, or perhaps the comforting scent of a warm drink you're holding?

Now, think about how this rainy day makes you feel inside. Do you feel cosy and warm, snuggled up with a book? Or perhaps a little bit bored, wishing you could play outside? Maybe it makes you feel peaceful and thoughtful, watching the drops race down the window pane. Or does it make you feel energetic and want to splash in puddles?

Your task is to use your best descriptive words to paint a picture of this rainy day for your reader, and then explain the feelings it stirs within you. Remember to show your feelings, not just tell them! What actions do you take, or what thoughts go through your mind, because of the rain?

💡 Writing Tips

  • Use your senses: What can you see, hear, smell, and feel when it rains?

  • Show, don't just tell: Instead of "I felt happy," describe why you felt happy (e.g., "A warm, fuzzy feeling spread through me").

  • Think about your feelings: Do you feel cosy, sleepy, playful, or even a bit grumpy?

  • Use powerful words: Choose exciting adjectives (e.g., "dull," "sparkling," "pitter-patter") to make your description vivid.

📝 Sample Answer

The sky outside my window was a vast, bruised purple, heavy with rain that had been falling all morning. A steady drumbeat echoed on the roof, a relentless rhythm that seemed to lull the whole world into a quiet hush. I could see the puddles growing bigger and bigger in the garden, reflecting the grey light like smudged mirrors. A soft, earthy smell drifted in when Mum opened the kitchen door, mixing with the comforting scent of freshly baked biscuits.

I felt so incredibly cosy. Tucked up on the sofa with my fluffy blanket, a mug of warm hot chocolate steaming in my hands, I watched the raindrops race each other down the windowpane. A little sigh of contentment escaped me. Usually, I'd be itching to go out and play, but today, the rain made me feel safe and wonderfully sleepy. It was a perfect day for reading my favourite book, lost in its pages while the world outside washed itself clean.
