Zoo Animals
The Prompt
Imagine you're on an exciting trip to the zoo! We want you to write a brilliant descriptive piece, painting a picture with your words so vivid that anyone reading it feels like they are right there beside you.
Start by setting the scene: What's the first thing you notice when you walk through the gates? Is it the chatter of people, the smell of straw, or the distant roar of a lion? Think about the sights – the colourful signs, the lush green plants, the wide-open enclosures. What sounds fill the air – squawking birds, splashing water, or the gentle rustle of leaves?
Then, choose 2 or 3 of your favourite animals. Don't just list them! Bring them to life. What do they look like? Are they enormous and shaggy, or sleek and striped? How do they move – do they pounce, slither, or gracefully glide? What noises do they make? Do they seem happy, curious, or perhaps a little sleepy? Use powerful adjectives and adverbs to make your descriptions sparkle. Make us feel the excitement and wonder of being at the zoo!

📝 Sample Answer
As soon as I stepped through the grand archway of Safari World, a symphony of exotic sounds washed over me. The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and something faintly sweet, hummed with excitement. To my left, a family of chattering monkeys swung playfully from ropes, their tiny, nimble fingers clutching bananas. Further on, the gigantic elephant enclosure loomed, a vast landscape of dusty plains and a shimmering waterhole.
My eyes were drawn to a magnificent lion, King Mufasa, stretched out regally on a sun-warmed rock. His golden mane, thick and wild, framed a face of calm power. With a slow, deliberate yawn, he revealed a cavern of gleaming teeth before settling back down, his amber eyes half-closed. He seemed to be dreaming of the vast savannah. Nearby, the cheeky meerkats stood guard on their hind legs, their small, dark eyes constantly scanning their surroundings. They darted and scurried, their tiny paws digging furiously, always on the lookout for danger or a tasty snack. The zoo was a magical place, full of incredible creatures and unforgettable sights.
