Walking on Gravel
The Prompt
Imagine you are standing on a path made entirely of tiny, hard stones – gravel! Your task is to write a descriptive piece that brings this experience to life for your reader. We want to know exactly what it's like to walk on gravel, using your senses.
Focus on two main things:
-
The Sound: What noises do your feet make as they press down and move across the stones? Do they crunch loudly? Do they make a soft, scraping sound? Does it sound different if you walk slowly versus quickly? Think about words like 'grind', 'rattle', 'crackle', 'pop'.
-
The Texture/Feeling: How does the gravel feel under your shoes? Is it smooth or rough? Are the stones round or pointy? Do your feet sink slightly, or do they feel like they're rolling over tiny marbles? Does it feel firm, or does it shift and slide? Think about words like 'bumpy', 'uneven', 'loose', 'sharp', 'slippery'.
Try to paint a picture with your words, so that anyone reading your description can almost hear the crunch and feel the wobble of the gravel beneath their own feet!

📝 Sample Answer
My trainers landed softly on the gravel path, but the quiet didn't last. With my first step, a satisfying crunch echoed up through my feet. Each stone felt distinctly round and bumpy beneath the thin rubber sole, some rolling a little, making my foot wobble slightly. As I walked, it was a constant symphony of small sounds: a soft scrape as I dragged my foot, a louder grind when I put my weight down, and a tiny rattle as the loose stones shifted. It wasn't smooth like pavement; instead, it was a rough, uneven carpet of grey and brown, always reminding me of its presence with every single step.
