Sunset Colors

Primary & ElementaryChallengingDescriptive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine you are standing outside, watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon. Your task is to describe the amazing colours you see in the sky during a sunset. Don't just say 'red' or 'orange'! Think about all the different shades and how they blend together. Does the sky look like it's on fire, or like a gentle watercolour painting? Are there streaks of gold, splashes of purple, or hints of soft pink? Use exciting adjectives (describing words) and vivid verbs (action words) to bring your sunset to life. Think about how the light changes and what shapes the clouds might make. Let your words paint a beautiful, colourful picture for your reader.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Use your senses! What do you see, hear, or even feel when you imagine a sunset?

  • Don't just list colours. Think about how they look – are they bright, soft, fiery, or gentle?

  • Use 'like' or 'as' to make comparisons (e.g., 'the sky was like a giant painting').

  • Imagine you're painting a picture with words. What details would you include?

📝 Sample Answer

As the sun began its slow journey downwards, the sky erupted in a spectacular show of colour. Fiery oranges melted into soft, buttery yellows, stretching across the horizon like a giant, warm blanket. Streaks of candy-floss pink appeared, blending gently with hints of deep, royal purple near the edges. The clouds, once fluffy white, now glowed with golden edges, looking like enormous, shimmering islands floating in a sea of apricot and rose. It was as if a giant artist had dipped their brush into every warm colour imaginable and painted the evening sky.
