Spooky Old House

Primary & ElementaryChallengingDescriptive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine it's the darkest part of the night. A thick, inky blackness hangs heavy in the air, and a sliver of moonlight barely peeks through the clouds. You've stumbled upon an old, forgotten house, standing alone on a lonely hill. It looks like it's been there for hundreds of years, perhaps even longer, and it holds countless secrets within its crumbling walls.

Your task is to become a word-artist and describe this spooky old house at night. We want to feel the chill, hear the creaks, and see the shadows through your writing! Think about:

  • What does it look like from the outside? Are the windows like empty eyes? Is the roof sagging like an old man's back?
  • What sounds might you hear? The wind whistling through broken panes? A distant groan?
  • What feeling does it give you? Is it just scary, or is it also lonely, mysterious, or even a little bit sad?
  • Use your senses! Don't just tell us it's spooky; show us how it's spooky with vivid descriptions of what you see, hear, and maybe even imagine you smell (dust, damp, old wood?).
  • Powerful words: Choose strong adjectives and verbs that paint a clear picture in the reader's mind. Make us shiver!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Imagine you're standing right in front of the house. What can you SEE, HEAR, and even SMELL?

  • Use powerful 'wow' words (adjectives) to make your descriptions vivid, like 'glowing' or 'shattered'.

  • Think about what the house reminds you of – maybe a giant, sleeping monster or a witch's crooked tooth?

  • Describe just a few things in great detail, rather than lots of things quickly.

  • Start outside, then imagine peeking through a window or a slightly open door.

📝 Sample Answer

The old house loomed against the bruised, purple sky like a giant, crooked tooth. Its windows, dark and empty, stared out like the eyes of a forgotten beast. A shiver of wind snaked around the crumbling chimney, making it whistle a mournful, ghost-like tune. The garden was a tangled mess of thorny bushes and dying weeds, reaching out like bony fingers. One wooden shutter hung loose, banging a slow, rhythmic thump-thump against the wall, a heartbeat in the silence. Moonlight, thin as a spider's web, stretched across the cracked front door, making the peeling paint look like ancient, withered skin. Every shadow seemed to twist and stretch, ready to grab hold.
