Continue the Story

Primary & ElementaryChallengingCreative Writing

Imagine you are at the playground, ready for a normal day, but something amazing has happened! Your task is to continue the story and bring this magical adventure to life.

Your starting sentence: You must start your story with this exact sentence:

"The playground slide, usually a boring metal chute, had somehow transformed overnight into a glistening, rainbow-coloured tunnel that promised a much longer ride."

Things to think about as you write:

  • The Discovery: Who is there with you? How do you feel when you first see the transformed slide?
  • The Ride: What does it look, sound, and feel like inside the tunnel? Is it fast, bumpy, or like floating through space?
  • The Destination: Where does this super-long tunnel lead? Describe this strange new world.
  • The Adventure: What exciting, funny, or mysterious thing happens when you arrive? How does your story end?

Use your imagination to make your readers feel like they are sliding right alongside you!

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Start with the sentence: Begin your story exactly with: "The playground slide, usually a boring metal chute, had somehow transformed overnight into a glistening, rainbow-coloured tunnel that promised a much longer ride."

  • •

Imagine what happens next: Who discovers the slide? Do they dare to go down it? What does the ride feel like? Where does it lead?

  • •

Use your senses: Describe what you see (the colours, what's at the end), hear (whooshing sounds, giggles), and feel (speed, excitement, maybe a bit of fear!).

  • •

Show, don't just tell: Instead of "It was exciting," try "A thrill shot through Lily as she zoomed faster than a rocket!"

  • •

Think about the ending: Does it lead to a magical land, back to the playground, or somewhere completely unexpected?

📝 Sample Answer

The playground slide, usually a boring metal chute, had somehow transformed overnight into a glistening, rainbow-coloured tunnel that promised a much longer ride. Leo rubbed his eyes, convinced he was still dreaming. But no, there it was, shimmering under the morning sun! He peered into the opening, a kaleidoscope of colours swirling hypnotically. A faint, sweet smell, like strawberries and fizzy pop, drifted out. Taking a deep breath, Leo climbed up, sat down, and pushed off. Whoosh! He was instantly swallowed by the vibrant tunnel. Reds, blues, and yellows blurred past him as he zipped downwards, faster and faster, a giggle bubbling up from his stomach. He felt weightless, like flying, and the air tingled with magic. Just when he thought he'd never stop, he shot out of the end, landing softly on a bed of fluffy, pink clouds. Above him, giant lollipops grew like trees, and candy floss sheep grazed peacefully.
