Write a continuation of the story based on the following opening:
The new school caretaker was a quiet man with kind eyes, but Sam noticed he always carried an ornate, heavy-looking key on a chain around his neck, and always avoided the locked door in the school basement.
Your task:
- Write a narrative that continues directly from this starting point.
- Explore the mystery of the caretaker, the key, and the locked basement door.
- Build suspense and describe what Sam discovers when the door is finally opened.
