Talking Object Story

Primary & ElementaryChallengingCreative Writing

The Prompt

Imagine your house is full of secrets, and one of them is an ordinary object that isn't quite so ordinary after all... it can talk!

Your mission is to write a thrilling, funny, or heartwarming story about one of these secret talking objects. Look around your home. What catches your eye? It could be anything: a lonely sock under the bed, a dusty old photo frame, a mischievous whisk in the kitchen, or even a wise old armchair.

Once you’ve chosen your object, think about:

  • Its Personality: Is it grumpy, cheerful, brave, or a bit of a chatterbox? How does it sound when it speaks?
  • Its Secret Life: What does it do when no humans are around? What does it see and hear from its spot in the house?
  • Its Wish or Problem: Does it dream of adventure? Is it trying to help someone? Or is it just trying to escape a messy cupboard?

Your story should have a clear beginning (how the object starts talking or its secret is revealed), a middle (the main adventure or challenge it faces), and an end (how its story concludes). Use exciting words to describe your object and its world. Let your imagination run wild – what amazing things could a talking object in your house get up to?

💡 Writing Tips

  • Choose your object carefully! Pick something interesting that could have a secret life, like an old teddy bear, a dusty book, or even a grumpy remote control.

  • Give your object a personality. Is it shy, cheeky, bossy, or adventurous? How does its personality show when it talks?

  • What does your object want? Does it dream of going outside, finding a lost friend, or simply being noticed? This can be the main adventure of your story!

  • Where does your story happen? Describe the parts of your house from your object's point of view. What does it see, hear, or feel?

  • Plan a beginning, middle, and end. How does your object discover its voice? What adventure does it have? How does the story finish?
