Invent a New Festival

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedCreative Writing

Imagine your town or village is about to host a brand-new, never-before-seen festival! Your task is to invent this spectacular celebration from scratch.

Your Writing Mission: Write a descriptive piece that brings your invented festival to life. Make your reader feel like they are standing right in the middle of the celebration.

Key Elements to Include:

  • The Concept: Give your festival a fantastic name and decide what it celebrates (such as the arrival of a season, a local animal, or a historical event).
  • Activities & Traditions: Describe the exciting events, such as parades, games, performances, or food stalls. What unique customs, songs, or costumes do people have?
  • Sensory Descriptions: Use vivid details to capture the dazzling colours, joyful sounds, delicious smells, and the overall mood (whether it is playful, mysterious, grand, or cosy).

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Brainstorm a Name: What's your festival called? A catchy name makes it memorable!

  • •

Think 'Why?': What amazing thing or special part of your town/village is your festival celebrating?

  • •

Use your Senses: What can people see (bright colours, decorations), hear (music, laughter), smell (food, flowers), feel (warm sun, soft costumes)?

  • •

Plan the Fun: What exciting activities, games, or parades happen?

  • •

Create a Tradition: Does everyone wear a special hat, sing a particular song, or eat a unique treat?

📝 Sample Answer

Welcome to the Whispering Woods Wiggle! Every year, as the first tiny buds unfurl on the ancient oak trees in our local woods, our village celebrates the magic of spring and the wisdom of the trees. It’s a day bursting with emerald green and sunshine yellow.

The festival kicks off with the 'Wiggle Parade'. Children and adults alike dress up as their favourite woodland creatures – squirrels with bushy tails, owls with huge sparkly eyes, and foxes with fiery red capes. We all weave and wiggle our way through the woods, following a path decorated with shimmering ribbons and wild flowers. Gentle flute music drifts through the trees, making everyone feel light and happy.

A special tradition is the 'Leaf Crown' competition, where everyone crafts a unique crown from fresh leaves and tiny blossoms. We also leave a small, smooth pebble at the base of the Grandfather Oak, our oldest tree, wishing for a year of growth and good luck. The air fills with the sweet smell of 'berry-bright' cakes, baked with wild berries, which we share around crackling fire pits as the sun begins to set. Laughter echoes softly between the trees, and a feeling of peace and joy settles over everyone, reminding us how special our woods are.
