About Winchester College

Founded in 1382, Winchester College is one of England’s oldest independent schools, renowned for its medieval setting, strong scholarly traditions and distinctive intellectual culture. Its discussion-based ‘Div’ programme encourages broad thinking beyond public-examination syllabuses, while house life, music, sport and creative pursuits shape the boarding experience. The school has begun welcoming girls in the Sixth Form, although the main younger boarding intake remains for boys.

The normal entry to Winchester College is at 13+ into Year 9 for full-boarding boys; a fixed annual intake figure is not given on the current admissions pages. Families usually register by October of Year 6, and assessment involves school references, general-ability and writing tests and interview. There is also an 11+ pathway for boys finishing primary school, but this means joining The Pilgrims’ School in Year 7 with onward progression to Winchester at 13, not entering Winchester College directly in Year 7. Co-educational day and boarding entry is available at 16+.
