About St Albans School

St Albans School is a highly selective day school beside the historic cathedral and Abbey Gateway, with a strong scholarly tradition and a particularly distinctive setting at the heart of the city. It has long educated boys in its younger years and girls in the Sixth Form, and began admitting girls to Year 7 in September 2026; co-education is being extended progressively. Music, sport, drama and a broad range of societies complement its academic culture.

The school’s published guidance indicates approximately 80 places at 11+ for Year 7, plus a separate 11+ deferred pathway of roughly 80 places for pupils joining Year 9 after prep school. There is also a direct 13+ route into Year 9, typically around 60–70 places; these figures are approximate and can change. Its entrance process uses an online six-part assessment in English, maths, reasoning and problem-solving, with interviews and school references. Girls begin joining at the 13+ Year 9 entry point from 2028.
