About Magdalen College School

Founded in 1480, Magdalen College School (MCS) is a selective independent day school in Oxford with deep links to the city’s scholarly and cultural traditions. Its teaching emphasises intellectual curiosity, academic breadth and creative participation, while extensive bursary provision supports social mobility. The younger school currently serves boys and the Sixth Form is co-educational; girls will begin joining the Junior School in 2027 and Year 7 of the Senior School from 2030.

The Senior School has established 11+ (Year 7) and 13+ (Year 9) intakes, but does not publish a reliable fixed number of external places for each. At 11+, pupils sit school entrance examinations and may be interviewed. For 13+, children from prep schools normally take an early pre-test in Year 6 for later entry, whereas other applicants can sit a direct 13+ examination nearer Year 9. Families of boys being assessed in Year 6 must choose between the 11+ and pre-test 13+ routes rather than register for both.
