Advertisements: Helpful or Not?
The Prompt
Every day, we see adverts on TV, online, in magazines, and even on billboards! They try to catch our eye and tell us about products, services, or even places to visit. But are these adverts truly helpful for us, or are they just clever tricks to make us buy things we don't really need?
Your task is to explore both sides of this argument. Think about:
- How adverts can be helpful: Do they give us useful information? Do they tell us about new things? Do they help us find good deals?
- How adverts might not be helpful: Do they try to persuade us too much? Do they make us want things we can't afford or don't really need? Do they sometimes make things look better than they are?
Imagine you're a detective investigating adverts! Look for clues about their good points and their not-so-good points. Use examples from adverts you've seen to support your ideas. Finish by sharing your own overall opinion: do you think adverts are mostly helpful, mostly unhelpful, or a bit of both?
