Advertisements: Helpful or Not?

The Prompt

Every day, we see adverts on TV, online, in magazines, and even on billboards! They try to catch our eye and tell us about products, services, or even places to visit. But are these adverts truly helpful for us, or are they just clever tricks to make us buy things we don't really need?

Your task is to explore both sides of this argument. Think about:

  • How adverts can be helpful: Do they give us useful information? Do they tell us about new things? Do they help us find good deals?
  • How adverts might not be helpful: Do they try to persuade us too much? Do they make us want things we can't afford or don't really need? Do they sometimes make things look better than they are?

Imagine you're a detective investigating adverts! Look for clues about their good points and their not-so-good points. Use examples from adverts you've seen to support your ideas. Finish by sharing your own overall opinion: do you think adverts are mostly helpful, mostly unhelpful, or a bit of both?

📝 Sample Answer

Adverts are all around us, from the TV to posters on the bus. Sometimes, they can be really helpful. For example, an advert might tell me about a new toy that I didn't know existed, or a special offer on my favourite cereal. They can also tell grown-ups about important things like new safety rules or a charity event. This information can help us make choices and save money. However, adverts can also be a bit sneaky. They often try to make things look super exciting, even if they're not that great in real life. Sometimes, they make me want things I don't actually need, just because the advert makes them look cool. It can make me feel like I *have* to have the latest gadget, even if my old one works fine. Adverts are very good at persuading us to spend our pocket money or ask our parents for things. Overall, I think adverts are a mix. They can be helpful when they give us useful information, but we also need to be careful because they are designed to make us want to buy things, whether we need them or not. It's important to think for ourselves and not just believe everything an advert says.
