11+ Writing Assessment Criteria by Region (GL, CEM, Independent Schools)
The core is the same: task match, structure, language, SPaG. Small differences change emphasis—not the fundamentals.
Common Core
Task & Organisation
- Audience, purpose, and form are clear
- Logical paragraphs and flow
Language & Style
- Varied sentences and precise vocabulary
- Tone matches the task (e.g., letter vs speech)
SPaG Accuracy
- Correct punctuation, spelling, and agreement
- Secure sentence boundaries
Key Differences
- GL: often shorter, focused tasks; reward clarity and SPaG accuracy
- CEM: can emphasise planning and logical development under time pressure
- Independents: value voice, detail, and control—while still requiring accuracy
Adapt Your Approach
- Protect editing time: SPaG marks are easy to lose everywhere
- Pick fewer, better-developed points over many thin ones
- Make audience obvious in the opening (esp. letter/speech)
Self-Check (Student Version)
- Is my task type clear from the opening line?
- Does each paragraph develop one idea with an example?
- Are sentence ends, capitals, and homophones correct?
